English and Kashmir willow are prized for the same reason they are fragile: the wood holds moisture, and that moisture is what gives a blade its response. Between seasons — and even between matches — a stored bat gives that moisture up to the air.
The failure is slow and then sudden. First the blade hardens and the sweet spot deadens. Then, one straight drive, the bat cracks — not from the impact, but from every dry month that came before it.
And how fast it happens depends on the season and the place the bat lives. A radiator-dry winter, a desert summer, a humid monsoon off-season — each ages willow differently, which is why the answer has to be a controlled environment rather than a rule of thumb.
A padded cover doesn't fix a humidity problem.
Walk into any cricket shop and the storage aisle sells one thing: padding. Covers and bags protect a bat from being knocked about — and do nothing at all about the air inside them. The one failure mode that actually ages a bat has no product on the shelf. That is the gap we built for.
